Intercomprehension Course: Activating and integrating individual multilingualism in foreign language teaching and learning

Intercomprehension is the competence or strategy to understand languages that we haven’t learned yet, but that are part of the same language family of a language we already know.

Aimed at foreign language teachers, the workshop uses different foreign languages (mainly Germanic languages) to demonstrate how multilingualism can be meaningfully integrated into language instruction and students’ learning process.

After an introduction to the topics of 'multilingualism/plurilingualism’ and 'plurilingual language teaching didactics', several approaches that are currently being discussed intensively in teaching practice (and research) will be briefly presented. Mostly, you will experience intercomprehension, examine types of intercomprehension tasks in depth and review existing language teaching materials to be adapted to your own teaching contexts. You will learn how to implement intercomprehension strategies in your teaching and therefore be ready to use them.
